The demo

A whole gym, with the door open.

Southgate Krav Maga does not exist, but everything else about it behaves like a gym that does: a full list of members on plans with real allowances, a weekly timetable, and six weeks of sign-ins behind it, including the frozen ones, the lapsed ones still turning up and the ones who have stopped coming. Nothing you do to it matters.

1. The tablet by the door

This is the bit worth doing first, and it needs no login at all. Open it on your phone — or, better, on the tablet you already have by your own door — and sign somebody in. Watch for a keyboard. There isn’t one.

Open the demo tablet

It asks whether to use this browser as the tablet. Say yes and this browser reaches the sign-in screen and nothing else, which is exactly what a paired tablet can do. There is a way back out on every screen, and the office side opens fine in a private window.

2. The office

Then look at what those sign-ins turned into. The same login is printed on the demo’s own sign-in page, so there is nothing to ask us for.

Everyone in it is invented and every phone number is in Ofcom’s 07700 900xxx range, which is reserved for drama.

Worth five minutes, in this order

  1. Sign somebody in

On the demo tablet, tap Sign in, tap a letter, tap a name. Then do it again and notice that the screen has already forgotten the last person. Try Not on the list? and see the only keyboard in the product.

  2. Look at Today

In the office, the person you just signed in is there, under the class that was on — or in the “nothing on at the time” block if you tried it at three in the afternoon.

  3. Open Over allowance

This is the screen that pays for the subscription. Somebody on one class a week who has been to four. Somebody with two of a ten-class block left. And the member whose membership ended six weeks ago who has been training twice a week ever since, without anybody at the desk saying a word.

  4. Open Drifting

Six people who have not been in for a fortnight or more, longest away first — and underneath, the ones who joined and have never once come. Those are the phone calls.

Put it back how you found it. There is a Reset in the demo’s own settings that rebuilds the whole gym from scratch and re-dates it to the moment you press it. Use it as much as you like — that is what it is for.
